Camping enthusiasts looking for a unique idea for a getaway should look no further than wilderness camping. Wilderness camping has many advantages such as having no need to hurry and no schedule to follow. It is a chance to commune with nature in some of the most attractive wilderness camping areas in the nation, many of which are not well-known to the general public. This kind of outdoor activity offers people the chance to relax and experience that indescribable feeling of being at peace with nature. They also have the luxury of all the time in the world to explore the beauty that nature is offering.

Here are some of the top places that other people who love wilderness camping recommend:

Andrew Molera Park, is found near Big Sur in California and is still one of those places that are fairly primitive for wilderness campers. There are over twenty sites to camp in, and interested campers should find out what kind of regulations are in place that should be complied with. This park offers wilderness camping trails for various outdoor activities that include several different types of landscape to choose from.

Theodore Roosevelt Wilderness in North Dakota is the home of this wilderness camping area, with nearly 30,000 acres to explore. Wilderness campers can spot many different types of animals and birds, including deer and bison, hawks and Bald Eagles. This wilderness camping area has around eighty-four miles of trails that give hiking access to the more inaccessible areas of the park. Wilderness campers must get a permit.

Ahjumawi Lava Springs Park gets its name from the Native American word, “ahjumawi” which means “where the waters come together.” This wilderness camping area is at one of the biggest fresh water spring systems in the nation. The camping areas are unique in that they can only be accessed by water, making sure you have the privacy you are craving. Visitors can enjoy the rustic beauty of the area that includes pristine water shores, places to view lava rock and scenery that includes Mt. Shasta.

Haleakala Park is a gorgeous spot in Hawaii which gives visitors a rare chance to do some wilderness camping in an area that is both primitive and breathtaking. There are two campsites that can only be reached by foot. These two campsites each offer a different experience for wilderness camping. Campers can get free permits to camp at either site, and there are various rules for camping in this park.

These are a few suggestions of places to go for wilderness camping. Needless to say, if you really yearn to escape from it all, you can blaze your own path into the wilder parts of America. Partake of nature’s gifts with wilderness camping today.

If your idea of a great vacation is being pampered, wilderness camping is not for you. Since these camps generally offer a variety of high excitement activities with not much in the way of modern conveniences pampering is not an option. However, during a week or two at a wilderness camp, children can learn important lessons such as survival skills, first aid and wilderness safety. As a plus, kids will also be forced away from the television and video games for a spell so they can connect with nature.

One of the first and most obvious aspects of wilderness camping is, of course, the wilderness. These campers do not visit already set up camps with cabins, kitchens and bathroom facilities. Along with leaders experienced in wilderness survival, they set out to make their own adventure and their own camps.

Wilderness campers generally carry all of the things they need to live during their camping trip in a backpack on their backs. Their packs will hold their clothing, food and eating utensils as well as tents and bedding. Depending on their activity, they may make and break camp each day, or they may set up one camp site and stay there during their entire camping trip.

These campers generally travel to remote places where there is no electricity or plumbing. They must learn to cook all of their food over a fire and also set up a tent and campsite that will be protected from the elements. Campers will be taught how to pick a good campsite and how to pitch a tent properly. They will also be taught fire and cooking safety.

During their camping experience campers will also learn the basics of wilderness safety. This will include training in which plants, animals and insects are poisonous and what should be done if someone should become poisoned by a plant or insect. Campers will bring the lessons they learn while wilderness camping back to their everyday lives where they will know how to properly handle emergency situations.

In addition to the skills they will learn, most campers will tell you the exciting activities they can participate in during the trip is the focal point of wilderness camping. Wilderness camping will generally focus on an activity that can no be experienced in any other type of camp.

These activities can include mountain climbing, white water rafting, glacier hiking or backpacking in the forest or jungle. Wilderness camps are available in locations in both the United States as well as foreign locations, so your child can choose the adventure that is right for them.

Participating in a wilderness camp can help children learn the skills they need to survive and help others survive in the case of an emergency. They will also learn the extent of their own inner and physical strength as they participate in the adventure of their lives. Additionally, wilderness camps will also force kids away from video games and television for awhile and help them focus on nature and the world around them.

For many families, camping is living in a comfortable motor home at a campground with tennis courts and swimming pools, perhaps movies at night. For backpackers and hikers, it means truly roughing it out in the wilderness, away from the amenities of civilization and being in tune with nature in the raw. No matter which one suits you, here are a few tips on camping for the first (and even multiple) time:

Consider borrowing or renting equipment. If you think that camping is not for you - and you dislike roughing it out.

Try car camping rather than trekking into the wilderness. This allows you to carry more supplies and you are safer. You can go to a place within an hour of your home and plan to stay for a day, two or three days. Find out if you can make advance reservations and buy a topographical map of the area.

Watch the weather forecast for the place you are going for a least a week ahead. Plan clothing and equipment accordingly.

Check on the need for a forest permit (this is free at ranger stations); ask about fire restrictions. Fishing usually requires a license, so be sure to find out about regulations.

If you are tent camping, be sure to have proper equipment.

When you pitch a tent, find a flat, smooth place. Clear way rocks and twigs, then put down your ground cover. If you think it might rain, dig a little trench around the tent to divert the water.

Keep meals simple, but bring plenty of food. Keep food in containers so that animals cannot get to it.

Do not drink water or even brush your teeth with it unless it has been purified first.

Dogs should be leashed and children should understand how to behave themselves.

Be careful of fire. Build one in fire rings and make sure they are put out before you leave.

Pack out garbage or leave it in garbage cans at campsite.

Dive up chores so that no one gets stuck with all the unpleasant jobs.

Make sure you have a ground cloth, this can be cheap tarpaulin.

Use plastic, but not disposable, plates and containers for food.

When you come home, turn the tent inside out and hose it, then hang it up to dry. Store it in a dry place, but not in its bag - keep it loose.

You may be wondering, with all the planning you need to do ahead of time to go camping, just when will it be finished? With a bit of simple strategy, you can complete your camping plans with confidence that your vacation can be a fun and successful one.

Before you head out on your vacation, basically, you will want to; find a campground, buy camping supplies and equipment, decide on what activities you want to do, and keep within a realistic budget.

First, you should decide how you want to camp. Consider what kind of sleeping setting you would like. For example, do you prefer resting in a recreational vehicle, (RV), or inside a pitched tent?

Most folks with families, tend to go for renting an RV since this vehicle may fit comfortably six people and is fairly easy to travel down the road in which makes it simple to move to another campsite or campground if necessary. Families may find the handy kitchen, bathroom and storage space for suitcases more enjoyable to live in. There are less bugs, no setting up a tent or cooking fires to build, except of course for something special, such as marshmallows.

However, some people prefer to get closer to nature and the outdoors. Therefore, pitching a tent and building a fire provide a better experience for them.

It is a good idea to buy a tent large enough to hold every one of your fellow campers and all your things. Tents come in many different styles. Some have screened porches and divided rooms. Even with these additional features, they are easy to set up and care for.

If pitching a tent is not your style, nor is the use of an RV, then there are always cabins to choose from. By renting a cabin, you can still be able to enjoy staying in a natural outdoor wilderness area, while having all the comforts of home.

Across the country in may wilderness areas with close by mountains and lakes, cabins can offer you peace and quiet. You can if you really want to, even though your cabin comes with a fireplace included, still make a campground fire, but it sure is hard to compete with sitting comfortably by your fireplace.

Whether it is an RV, a pitched tent, or inside a cabin, staying outdoors and being able to soak in the beauty and sounds of nature that will make all your planning well worth your time and consideration. Good camping to you and yours!

There are many kinds of wilderness camps offered throughout the United States, and many of them operate year round. Others operate during late spring, summer and early fall and can be located in warmer climates.

Most adventure wilderness camps reach full capacity during summer vacation time, and kids of all ages, from eight year olds to nineteen year olds, enjoy great summer activities and adventures.

A wilderness camp is one that takes kids out into the wilderness to experience all that Mother Nature has to offer. Most wilderness camps offer such activities as backpacking, horseback riding, hiking, canoing and mountain climbing.

Such activities are closely monitored and require each child to go through some training processes, and are very safe when practiced in the company of a certified camp instructor.

Wilderness camps can be found by location or by activity. There are wilderness camps located in every state within the United States, as well as in Canada, Europe and around the globe in such places like Australia, Mongolia and even Tibet.

Kids and teenagers around the world benefit from most wilderness camps experiences, and learn about their environment and how to survive in the wilderness. Others go to a wilderness camp for therapy, and psychologists and psychiatrists encourage troubled teens to go to a wilderness camp to find a sense of self and grow in confidence as they learn new skills.

There are religious based wilderness camps, which serve as retreats for church youth groups around the country and offer opportunities for kids to appreciate nature as a miraculous and well-balanced system of life. There are also Search and Rescue wilderness camps that teach teens and adults search and rescue methods and training in all kinds of first aid and survival skills that are used and needed when in the wilderness.

A wilderness camp can operate in the wintertime as well, and those who attend one during the cold season can expect loads of fun in the shape of skiing, snowboarding and ice or snow climbing. Summer wilderness camps located on coastlines offer snorkeling, surfing and boogie boarding activities, as well as beach Bar-B-Q fun and camp outs.

For those wilderness camps located in the mountains, kids can expect to enjoy white water rafting, kayaking and mountain biking activities, as well as fly-fishing, bass fishing or basic mountain climbing activities. Wilderness camps offer many city kids an experience of a lifetime out in the wilderness, where they can see stars at night and enjoy fresh air and sunshine by day. Most wilderness camps are moderately priced, and can be adapted to the skills and needs of your child. Many are within easy driving distance of most major cities.

Most wilderness camps have cabins and main dining rooms, though some offer tenting and open fire eating, depending on location and time of year. Wilderness camps offer children of all ages the opportunity to learn to appreciate the great outdoors, and to have a lot of fun in the process.

Parents looking for a quick fix usually choose troubled teen camps. There are two types of teen camps: boot camps and summer or wilderness camps. They usually last from one to six weeks, and while teens may shows signs of improvement for days or even weeks after coming home, they often revert back to old behaviors after the fear of authority disappears.

Boot camps are military-style facilities that use discipline, military exercises, rigorous physical training, and fear of authority to transform a troubled teen into a “good soldier” who follows rules. Unfortunately, most boot camps do not address underlying emotional or behavioral problems. Without therapy or behavior modification, long-term effectiveness is limited. If parents do chose to send their troubled teen to a boot camp, the best chance for long-term success is to follow it with a treatment program.

Wilderness camps are usually seen as an alternative to boot camps. Instead of the aggressive approach that boot camps tend to use, wilderness camps are more likely to be behavior modification programs with a component of the program held outdoors. They remove urban distractions so troubled teens can reconnect accept responsibility for their choices. Because these wilderness camps are generally held in summer, they may not include an academic component. There are a few that do, though, which is especially important for teens who have fallen behind during the school year.

The biggest benefit to wilderness camps as opposed to boot camps is that they often provide substance abuse treatment for troubled teens. Again, because wilderness camps usually only last for one to six weeks, the best chance for long-term success is to follow it with a treatment program. This will supplement and reinforce the treatment teens receive at camp.

Friends and clients alike are always surprised when I mention my passion for wilderness camping. Knowing me to be extremely “plugged in” (never away from my cellphone or laptop or iPod for more than an hour) they always laugh when I tell them my vacation plans. “I’m going wilderness camping!” All types of camping are fun, but wilderness camping holds a special place in the hearts of true campers.

Wilderness camping pits a man (or in my case a woman) against the elements.

When wilderness camping, you must live by your wits.

When wilderness camping, you are out on your own.

Wilderness camping requires self reliance and fortitude.

Wilderness camping tests your survival skills and your creativity.

Wilderness camping can be a real challenge.

So why the heck would anyone go wilderness camping? Especially when they could just drive into a campsite, pitch their tent ten feet from the car and enjoy all the comforts of home that they can cram into their car? And they don’t have to be lonely either. There are always beer guzzling partiers right in the next campsite making all kinds of noise.

So what could be the attraction with wilderness camping?

Being way out in the wilderness where you could be attacked by a bear? And once you get way out there, you only have the few meager supplies to eat that you could carry on your back. With this wilderness camping, you are a few days walk from the nearest fast food place and forget about beer. It is too heavy to carry and the nearest bar is a forty mile hike away. So what could possibly be the attraction of wilderness camping?

Well, the attraction of wilderness camping is all the things that it is and all the things that it is not.

Wilderness camping is a way to get some peace and quiet. No beer guzzling parties at the site next door. In fact, in most cases, you don’t see other campers when wilderness camping.

Wilderness camping is a chance to get away from all the modern mechanized distractions and to be alone, just alone with yourself and with whatever nature comes up with for you. No cellphones or laptops.

Wilderness camping can be a spirit quest.

Wilderness camping can put you in touch with your deepest self.

Wilderness camping can help you rebalance your life and priorities.

Wilderness camping gives you the space without distractions to see what is really there.

Wilderness camping gets you away from all the things you think define who you are and puts you in touch with the quiet space that is truly at the heart of who you are.

Wilderness camping gives you a chance to see, hear and touch unspoiled nature.

Wilderness camping gives you a chance to look around and see no manmade structures, no cell phone towers, no telephone poles, no wires, wires, wires, blocking your view.

Wilderness camping puts you out where things are natural and real.

That’s what wilderness camping does for me. I know it can do the same for you.
